The protagonist of the novel is Josef Knecht, an orphan with exceptional gifts who becomes the youngest Magister Ludi (Master of the Game) in Castalia's history. Knecht excels at the Glass Bead Game like no other, but gradually begins to perceive the dryness of a system that, however perfect, has become completely disconnected from real life.

In diplomatic dealings with the outside world—particularly with Plinio Designori (his fellow student who represents the “normal” world) and Father Jacobus (a Benedictine historian)—Knecht begins to understand that Castalia, in its pursuit of intellectual perfection, has created a sterile and self-referential system.
